There is debate about what platform is best for hosting your web site on. Truth is, any one will work unless there are -specific- technologies you need. For example, if your web application requires .NET hosting, or connection to MS Access or MS SQL databases, you'll need the Windows hosting. Otherwise, you can save money by choosing Linux or Unix hosting!
HTML or HTM are not the only types of pages you will find on the web. When you visit a website and the home page is "index.php" or "default.aspx", that means that the page is built on a scripting language. There is a very good change that the site is a "dynamic" site - meaning that there is something going on in the background that you don't see. Examples of this are primarily functions such as a webpage talking to a database in the background.
A Good Host Is Hard To Find. Well, sort of. There are literally hundreds (if not thousands) of web hosts to choose from when searching for a good web host. So, how do you know which ones are -good- and which ones will take your money and run? You've got to do a little homework...and that's why GetWebHost.Info is here!
Need answers? We are offering a 47 page guide to web hosting called "Web Hosting Exposed!" that answers all of your common questions about the ins and outs of web hosting. It covers everything from server hardware to bandwidth to reseller hosting.
What is the difference between Shared hosting and Dedicated hosting?
Shared hosting, which is the cheaper of the two, means that your website is on the same webserver as other peoples' websites. Depending on the hosting company, as many as 1000 other websites may be on the server you are on. This is generally not a problem for personal or small business websites that have static (html) pages or some database connectivity. Dedicated hosting means that you have your own webserver to yourself, and can often install your own back end applications. Dedicated hosting can often cost hundreds of dollars per month, where shared hosting usually starts in the 5 to 6 dollar a month range.
I've seen web hosting for free. Can I use it without trouble?
The answer to that is yes, and no.
Most free web hosting places their own advertisement banners on your website, or severely limits your disk space and bandwidth, or both. For a personal web site, that is usually acceptable. For a business website, I would not touch free. Invest a little money and at least get a decent shared hosting plan.
What are some things I should (or should not) look for in a web host?
Number one is don't choose a web host that doesn't give you a support phone number. Most top rated hosts provide a phone number you can call 24/7 for support issues. Second, if a web host is offering unlimited space, unlimited domains, and unlimited bandwidth, avoid them. There is no such thing - they have physical limitations just like your computer on your desk does. They are doing what is known as "overselling" - basically gambling on your site and how much resources it will use.
